  36. I have no argument with cli's (love my Suns),  but I do spend a lot of
  37. time in GEM also.  I just wanted to mention that there is an acc
  38. available at atari.archive that lets you do grep/ff from the desktop -
  39. it's called datei sucher (data seeker auf Deutsch I think). I forget
  40. the name of the archive but this is what comes up on the acc menu.
  41. It can make your non-cli moments a little easier.  Yes it's in German
  42. but it seems pretty straightforward (maybe I'm missing some advanced
  43. features).

  58. Well Bill why not give LZH201E a try, it is Now in English, well the one
  59. that I have is, but then it come from Thomas Quester, you could even
  60. find that there is no need for all your Lharcs programs as this supports
  61. all of the lh formats, and that the bugs that you state could have been fixed,
  62. don't you make mistakes..

  64. There is a PC version of lh5 that I have seen, may be some one could
  65. port that,?.

  67. May be Thomas is not into hands off programing, ala C Lang'uage, I am
  68. a bit that way myself being of a Engineering background.

  88. I think you will find that lh5 is now supported on the PC,
  89. I don't know about other platforms, and the LZH201E is now in English..

  91. You can now find all these Thomas Quester Programs on GEnie, as I
  92. uploaded them, LZH201_E.LZH, PFX_17E.LZH and AFX_12E.LZH.

  162. These are good drives, but I think you will find that these are a Run Out,
  163. Supra are no longer into Atari Drives.

  165. Also I have seen quoted that Supra does not not support there drives on
  166. the STE, so Please test them out first..

  185.         Well, once again I am posting to see if anyone has the above
  186. program.  It is called STMIDIEX or MIDIEXCL.LZH.  It was mentioned in
  187. ZNET Software Shelf #91-34.  I really need this program.  It will store
  188. system exclusive files from midi devices.  If anyone has these programs
  189. or something else that does the same, please E-mail me and let me know
  190. where to find them.  Please!!! Please!!! Please!!!  Thanks!!!
  191.         Also, does anyone know anything about WINXV13.LZH, also mentioned in
  192. ZNET #91-34.  It supposedly lets you open up to 127 windows at once, instead
  193. of the limit of seven.  Is it any good?  Where can I find this too?

  290. The C0 100109-001 is the faulty one, the good ones are C0 25912-38 or 38A,
  291. I did see a article on Ram upgrades, it could be the one at achives, or
  292. the one on GEnie, but the funny thing was the Author stated that you
  293. could not have 2 megs in bank 0, but does not state why, The internals
  294. book quotes that MMU settings..

  331. We saw one at the August meeting of the San Diego Atari Computer Enthusiasts
  332. meeting. It ran several benchmark tests against a TT and an unmodified ST. It
  333. was pretty fast, and they were taking orders.

  350. It was faster than the TT on some applications, but not on others. Of course,
  351. the SST is (supposedly) 100 percent compatable with ST software, which the TT
  352. is not. As the GBS rep said, too, the TT and the SST are two different
  353. machines with different strengths which can't be measured by speed alone.

  355. But for pure number crunching, the SST looks pretty quick.

  368. 1) Spectre GCR works well on the TT (according to Dave Small), but only when
  369.         it works at all. It seems about 70% of TT's have cartridge ports which
  370.         are enough out of spec that Spectre doesn't work with them.

  372. 2) The TT keyboard is not bad, it's not as good as most PC and terminal
  373.         keyboards, but it's a lot better than some PC keyboards and infinitly
  374.         better than the ST keyboard!

  424. I am in the process of obtaining an SLM804 off a friend and I have a few queries
  425. 1) I have seen this printer under a different name (not DMA obviously), what
  426. is the manufacturer of this device so I can find out the price of their spares.

  428. 2) Is Ultrascript commercially available in the states, (or some eqivalent), I
  429. am looking for a PS emulator, preferably one that take TYPE 1 fonts (I
  430. know US doesnt), and also it would be nice to take output from the RS232 so
  431. I can use the Atari as a PS printer to a PC. I think their is a french prog
  432. called GRAFX but I have no details on that either. So as much info as possible
  433. please (inc price).

  453. I've just tried using flib.ttp (from the showdvi/dviprint package) to make
  454. pk-libraries of the pk fonts coming with the SLM804DE/DM dvi-printing
  455. stuff. Unfortunately, dviprint then refused to recognize these flib's
  456. (whole series of 'font not found' messages). For example, I used flib.ttp
  457. to combine all the fonts in the mag___1.000 directory into pk0300, and so
  458. on.
  459.  Would anybody be able to suggest what might be the problem here? On a
  460. related note, I can't get slm804dm.ttp to produce printer output; it would
  461. be nice to be able to do TeX printing on the SLM804 without having to run
  462. the Diablo driver first.

  500. If you could talk to Jwahar Bammi he could answer your questions.

  502. I believe that Jwahar tests new version of GNU sw on a UNIX computer (not
  503. sure which kind) and cross compiles the GNU C source code for the ST. So,
  504. it is possible to cross compile the GNU SW and generate ST TOS/TTP files
  505. on a UNIX machine.

  507. which SPARC machine are you using? I am still deciding which machine to get
  508. to replace my cranky old Mega ST2+2. I am undecided as to whether to buy a SPARC
  509. 1+ (or SPARC clone) with SUN's OPen look, or to buy a Mac IIci/FX with AUX.

  541. My wife has the misfortune of using a Mac IIci with 8 megs of RAM and
  542. AUX 2.0 (or whatever the latest version is) at work.  She is utterly
  543. frustrated by the performance (crashes a lot).  They are upgrading an
  544. old Mac II to an fx and she will be getting that machine.  She hopes
  545. the fx performs better with AUX.

  582. Hm.... A/UX sucks. Some things in life, like wine and cheese,
  583. improve with age. A/UX is more like a loaf of moldy bread...

  585. As I recall, A/UX uses the same scheduler as MultiFinder, meaning non-
  586. preemptive. That's not real Unix. That puts the A/UX multitasking on the
  587. same level of sophistication as Minix on an 8086 PC. (Except you have to
  588. pay a bit more than $99 for *this* toy operating system, and you don't
  589. get the source code. And don't say you don't care about source code; if
  590. you're not a programmer then why the hell do you want Unix on your idget
  591. Mac in the first place?)

  595. are only as smart as the people using/programming them." Too bad the inverse
  596. is not true (i.e., "computers are only as stupid as the people using them.")
